Ode to Mallory on Her Big Day

Ode to Mallory on her 5th Birthday:

Miss Mallory, oh, my dear sweet niece!
Today is a day for having a piece
Of birthday cake, or maybe two -
‘Cuz you’re five now and there’s so much to do!
You’ll need that energy, oh yes,
To learn more things than your five years past!

When you were littler and had birthday one,
You learned how to walk and then how to run.
In your second birthday celebration year
You spoke and laughed with such great cheer!
And then, oh gosh, you turned three -
You became a big sister with lots to oversee!
At four, you started ballet and pre-school;
Everyone around you thought you were pretty cool!

What will you learn this year, sweetie pie?
Will it be swimming under water, flying in the sky?
Will it be a new language, writing or taking a dive?
What will happen this year, when you’re five?

Where will you go, little Mallory Jane?
Will you watch thunder, rain, a hurricane?
Will you travel by bike, or hike to the lake?
Will you help with the snow to shovel and leaves to rake?

Who will you meet?  Who, dear kiddo?
Will you meet a President, a pop star, a DoDo?
Will you shake hands with a policeman or a fire guy?
Who will you meet in this year you turn five?

Well, whoever you meet and whoever you see,
I know they will grow to love you, believe me.
You have so many gifts, amazing child,
You are caring, fearless and sometimes wild.
You are smart and funny, you tell lots of jokes.
You are graceful and beautiful, strong as an oak.
You know how to say sorry and forgive with your soul
Because feelings get hurt and are hard to control.
You’re generous with your sweetness, everyone loves you.
Of course they do, why wouldn’t they?  Mallory, you’re you!

Little One, I often hear it decreed
That with great power (turning FIVE!) comes great responsibility.
So here’s my advice, dear Mallory Moo,
It’s hard to be nice all the time, yes, it’s true.
But it’s harder to apologize to everyone, P.U.!
So be kind to all people, it’s not hard to do.
Listen to your Mom and Dad, they’re right there beside you.
You’ll never be alone, with them there to guide you.
Use your gifts and senses to be the best you can be -
Those gifts come from God; you’re the trustee!

We’re so proud of you, Doodle Bug, and think you’re pretty great!
Happy 5th Birthday!  July 1st is a big date!

Mallory and her little sister, Elliott.
