Walking and Allergies

Yesterday was a preeeeeetty busy day for my little family.  By 8, Oliver was sacked out in the other room and Doug refused to move from the overstuffed chair due to ALL the extensive activities.

First and foremost:
OLIVER TOOK TWO STEPS ON SATURDAY!  I was sitting down in front of him, he took his hand off the ottoman and just came at me.  And then fell.  He's been standing pretty regularly and even walking with you when he's in the mood and you're holding onto both his hands.  I'll keep you posted!

Friday night, we got the results of the allergy blood test Oliver's pediatrician had done on him earlier this week.  On a scale of 1-6 (6 being the most severe), looks like he's allergic to casein (milk) at a 1, egg whites at a 3 and wheat gluten and peanuts both at a rating of 4.

Doctor: Yes, so he'll have to go off all these things for a month.  And you're breastfeeding, right?  You'll have to go off of it too.
Me: Wheat gluten?  That's like, in everything, right?
Doctor: Mm-hmm.  It's in a lot.

Oliver's doctor specializes in nonchalance.  Oh, we may be having to change our diets for the rest of our lives?  And you seem offended when I ask for the print-out to get a second opinion?  NEW DOCTOR!

After some panic attacks (Doug: "He'll never be invited to birthday parties!"  Blaine: "He'll never get to eat Burger King!"), we calmed down and researched a little, but we have a lot more to do.  Today, however, Oliver and I were completely successful in having a dairy / egg white / peanut / wheat-free diet.  Oliver and I ate egg yolk, sausages, peppers and potatoes for breakfast, tomato soup and fruit for lunch, gluten-free Kix for snack and corn tortilla, shredded chicken and fish, mango salsa, carrots and applesauce for dinner.  It's a lovely menu for a Saturday, when I have all the time in the world to prepare (and order in California tacos), but I'm worried about the week.  Doug's helping me to relax by reminding me that a) we still need to see a specialist, b) he could grow out of this, c) I won't be constantly in the kitchen and d) this isn't the end of the world.  So, there's that.  I can't wait to talk to someone to understand how Oliver will be able to get his daily allotment of vitamins and minerals.  Does Flintstones make infant multi-vitamins?

After breakfast, we had O's Music Together class.  We made a point of listening to the CD every day this week so that we wouldn't get admonished again by Seung-Hee for not knowing the music.  We still have more homework, but I sang loud and proud to show her that I did, in fact, know the words to Skip To The Lou My Darling.  Oliver crawled happily around and even started bopping with his rattle-egg.  Such a good boy.

After some gluten-free grocery shopping - shocker, there's not a lot out there - we went home, O took a nap and ate some lunch and then we headed into the city to go to the Chinatown YMCA and do some laps.  Doug donned a swim cap with us - awesome - and we all had a great time!  O didn't cry at all, and even jumped a little into Doug's arms from the side!  Evel Knievel!

On the way back home, we all fell fast asleep in the train.  Mouths agape, heads lolling...we didn't wake up until some joker jerked my arm when sitting down next to us.  Tons of other seats, but he chooses to sit next to the exhausted mama holding her baby in the ergo.  Nice, douche.  I was holding my breath waiting for him to say anything so that I could say something well-placed and equally dicky, like, "Oh, you don't like him touching your arm?  Well, you should've thought about that when you woke up my whole family!"  Yeah...maybe it's a good thing he didn't say something - I would've been embarrassed later.  You know how things always sound so much more bad-ass in your head?

Finally, at bathtime, Oliver said Mom.  Or rather, Mahhh..mmmahh.  It was the first time he had said it without being sick or tired.  Doug caught it on camera, so look it up on facebook!

Oh, and Oliver has learned that if he piles things up and stands on top of them, he gets taller and can reach a whole array of previously-off-limits items.  The other day, when he was home with double conjuctivitis (it's been a grrreat month), Doug said he pulled all the books off the lower shelves, stood on top of them and his dump truck, and tried to climb the bookshelf like it was a ladder.  Doug was, of course, nearby and watching, close enough to reach out and grab him if he fell - which he did - but it's showing that O has a bit of a penchant for danger.  Stay tuned for the pictures of black eyes that are sure to be coming.

Wish us luck this week as we venture into the land of "free" dieting and maybe, just maybe, have a house of health for a few days!

Does it make you feel any better to know Ben was at a 12 and I didn't kill him? Still have yet to use the epi pen.
Also? Tacos are awesome. Get used to them :)
