December Saturdays...

My gosh, we dearly love our Saturdays, Doug and I.  We made a decision long ago to keep our Saturdays to ourselves as much as possible.  They can be productive or lazy, but as long as we spend them together, we're happy.  This morning we woke up, got some bagels and did the laundry.  We also went to the hardware store and while I folded clothes, Doug put plastic up on the windows to keep heat IN.  And by the decreasing amount of cursing coming from the other room, I think he may be about finished and it's not even noon!

Nothing, however, NOTHING matches December Saturdays.  There's only a few before Christmas comes, and we spend those listening to carols while addressing Christmas cards, shopping in the Union Square holiday marketplace (which, really, has the same stores and items every year), making homemade treats for coworkers, baking holiday cookies for our annual cookie exchange with friends, and cleaning and recleaning the apartment because I tend to get sugar ALL OVER the house.  And decorating, lots of decorating - especially while watching a Christmas movie like The Grinch or Elf or even - wait for it - The Godfather.  That's our Christmas movie.  Even spending a Sunday afternoon writing out work's year-end performance reviews is fun as long as you can look up and stare at a brightly lit tree or hear "Leave the gun, take the cannolis!"

This year we've been particularly in the Christmas spirit.  I think it's the budding belly under my shirt that's doing it.  :)  Well, and the fact that we get to go to Michigan for Christmas and spend it with our new nieces!  Last year we spent Christmas in New York and just Skyped with everyone.  It was lovely , but we're looking forward to spending this holiday with family.  This year we've also started some new traditions.  Doug created a paper chain to count down to Christmas - never mind that half of the rings have already fallen uselessly to the floor due to cheap tape.  I've also started reading Dickens' A Christmas Carol to the baby.  Maybe it'll come out with a penchant for yuletide spirit.  I mean, who knows?

Either way, we're determined to enjoy these remaining December Saturdays and keep in mind what they really mean - while we're soon going to be basking in the warm holiday glow with family and friends, we're also spending time with each other, readying ourselves for a holiday with baby.  Even if holiday with baby means loads of morning sickness.  And isn't that the best present of all?
